FAQ
Why Lake Tahoe?
Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America and the second deepest in the US. The lake is famous for its sapphire hue with exceptional visibility, surrounded by the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
The area of Meeks Bay, located on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, provides a warm sandy beach, and a bay largely protected from wind and currents. Depth is easily attainable from the shore of Meeks Bay.
Aside from its beautiful environment, the lake presents a unique challenge. Freedivers will be competing at an altitude of 1,890+ meters/6,220+ feet with a summer average water temperature of 68°F/20°C at the surface.

How can I apply to compete?
We are limiting this first competition to a maximum of twenty six (26) athletes by invitation. This is for both safety and logistics purposes with this being the first year of the competition at Lake Tahoe and at high altitude in the US. Imagine the permitting and insurance hurdles we have to go through, as well as budgeting! Safety and a well-run competition for our athletes are our priorities so we can continue to do this year-after-year. We hope to expand and open it to more athletes next year and in future years after we’ve proven the success of this first competition. The ultimate goal is to increase competitive freediving opportunities in the US, but we need to crawl before we can run! If you’d like to be considered as an athlete, please contact us.
